The MEDIA ACT requires voice -assisted appliances (like smart speakers) to ensure that stations requested by name play correctly, give free access, and don't overlay advertising messages on the main (prescribed) stations. OFCOM have to run public consultation before any important decisions, such as licensing, or this one, which would otherwise let the big boys add adverts to smart speaker audio. (As Amazon do to plug Tune in, or whatever.)

It's a good part of the Media Act, one we should applaud. (OFCOM of course don't set any policy; thats for the government of the day and its the DCMS who set broadcast policy, for OFCOM to carry out as their agent.)
