We continue to make great strides in our mission to get the iconic Ross Revenge into dry dock and our fundraising total currently stands at £375k. A recently unearthed detention order with a litany of 125 contraventions reveals a truly dire situation for the ship back in November 1991 and shows just how far we have come. In the latest full charity update at radiocaroline.co.uk and rossrevengeofficial.com trustee Stewart Payne reveals a situation so bad, it's a miracle Ross Revenge wasn't scrapped.
Following the grounding on that notorious ships graveyard the Goodwin Sands, Ross Revenge was towed to Dover’s Eastern Docks where she was impounded and an official inspection by the Marine Office of the Department of Transport followed. The surveyor’s report included six-pages of contraventions, including: ‘Steering gear completely wrecked’, ‘No Radar’, ‘No navigation equipment’, ‘No lifeboat’, ‘No life jackets’ and ’No sanitary or shower facilities, heating, light or ventilation’ and many, many more
Station manager Peter Moore found the order a few weeks ago in a drawer on board Ross Revenge. After reading it he said: “The surveyors could just have written ‘everything’ when considering what was required for the ship to ever sail again. It made me realise that, while we have a mighty task in 2025, things were far more bleak in 1991, when we had a ship where nothing worked and no budget for repairs.”
But a solution was found - former chief engineer Ernie Stevenson answered the call for help and organised a team and list of repairs, and after a time the MCA surveyors started to have grudging admiration for his efforts - because of this Ross Revenge was eventually allowed to leave Dover."
