This is likely to be to do with only making the content available in the country they have negotiated the broadcasting rights for. Sports rights are notoriously fussy in the case of Five live. Medium wave does not respect borders but since 909 and 693 is closing pretty soon it won't be a problem for them any more. Won't miss it myself as I never listen to it.
