Shame about the DAB licence surrender. I could just hear it on a DAB Walkman in my area of London from the Surrey mux and miss it now.
As Atlantis has recently gained all these lucrative advertising contracts, it would be a great opportunity to join one of the main local London muxes and get much better coverage.
For example, the London 2 mux is half empty now so plenty of space available for Atlantis. Presumably you could negotiate a great deal as they are crying out for customers.
Slightly off topic but I don't understand why these mux operators don't ramp up the bit rates of each station pro rata to fill the multiplex. The quality improvement would be amazing and it costs the operator nothing more for delighted customers.
The station's contract could simply state a minimum bit rate which would be used when enough new stations fill up the spare capacity. I think they do this on some of the SSDAB muxes as I remember Caroline in London had some of the highest DAB audio quality running at 64k DAB+ for a long time before eventually dropping down to a still decent 48k.
