Rob Ashard reports:-
I saw a legend today. A very understated, meek and mild legend. Bob Orban, who invented the famous-in-radio-circles, Optimod audio processor.
His stand was receiving a best in show Award at the Las Vegas NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) Awards.
Today, Radio Caroline has three Optimods in use. One on the ship, a similar one in Strood, (both TV 8182 Optimods) and they are both really in pre-processing roles, and a digital Optimod AM 9200 at our 648AM transmitter site at Orfordness.
Furthermore, when Caroline returned from the Ross Revenge following the sinking of the Mi Amigo, it did so using an Optimod 8000 Multiband AM processor, probably the first to be heard by millions of people in Europe (there was another arguably before that in Ireland, but with nothing like the range and power of Caroline’s RCA Ampliphase 50kW transmitter on an almost perfect salt-water ground plane).
This huge AM signal was probably the nicest sounding transmission ever to be heard in Europe.
The quality of that audio was down to this man.
