The variations people are hearing are due to variations in the source quality due to shows using MP3 files which weren't used back in the days at sea which used all vinyl records.
648 always seems to sound best during a North weekend when all the audio comes from the ship and is consistent. Ideally, although it's over the top for AM radio, all source material should be from lossless files - FLAC or WAV - then it would be as good as it gets all the time.
Bearing in mind that the station is a community type station and uses volunteers producing shows the source material is not always going to be as good all the time as the big media groups which only use lossless files for playout (CD quality or better).
It's the best now it's ever been since they have been using 648 IMO.
