Hi Neil I appreciate what you are saying and yes it is 34 years ago, but technically the argument is it would have been easier to supply the ship until fully stocked before returning to air. There is always poor decision making within big companies, but Caroline was a clandestine operation, communication would have been very hard. One could argue if Chicago and O'Rahilly had been patient it would have given you and any crew onboard a better chance of survival over the following months. Plus returning with a better signal and well stocked ship would have given a better negotiating strategy to bring Caroline on land.
I find it very hard to believe that any conversation had taken place to plan a future for the radio station Caroline, it was becoming obvious that a sea based station would not be able to survive from a commercial perspective and if it did it would only be through discredited religious backers or worse extremists.
The only possible way forward was to come on land, but to protect Caroline's freedom of programming and a possible take over from commercial investors having an editorial say in the direction of the station would have been impossible.
Look at others stations that have come on land Hauraki and Veronica, stations that only survived by name only.
Atleast today's Caroline is free to play what they want, the compromise of a community of interest license has given Caroline the opportunity of broadcasting any piece of music they want to, the wording can be interpreted to play any popular music. Plus today's radio world is very different, it is a testament to everyone's efforts, including your valiant efforts ship based and those dark days of the Dover rescue and the RSL that helped the long journey to survival from the offshore legacy that we still have something today that has the traditions of the past and is still free to broadcast today. It gives a unique chance for an organisation that can not be interfered with by politics and big corporate business.
That's how I see it, no taking sides, I just see others interpretation of events that has got us where we are in 2023 and have come to different conclusions, there is no right or wrong, because this is what we have today and if not supported and planned they'll be no tomorrow for what was started back in 64, when I was 1.
