Yes they do work and There have been working examples of these based in North Africa I believe, though that is a somewhat different environment to that of Ramsey Bay. People always got fancy ideas for antennas in a maritime setting, think: Capitol Radio from The King David, barrage balloons or fibreglass whips, which are fine in some cases but have proved to be somewhat unsatisfactory in practice.
