Deer 1 seems to forget that FM signals, for Radio 4 and others, do NOT reach all parts of the UK (and beyond), as does the LW service.

Long Wave may be the OLDEST broadcast medium, but if it works and does its job well, that doesn't t mean it needs to be replaced by inferior networks. Why this constant urge to chuck out what's OK and replace it with something new and shiny, but less use?

The cost of the energy is not sufficient excuse - there are huge amounts of power being wasted all over the place. A few hundred KW to keepLW and MW transmitters running are not sufficient excuse. (and nor is a few of my eagle-eared dxer pals wish to pick up some rare catch from Mongolia or the Pacific islands.
