A smattering of incorrect statements across these posts.
Scott seems to know we have a DSPX processor as he mentions it, Walter. I suspect he’s referring to the Stream DSPX at Strood.
Chris Pearson’s Manx studio will be digital as it’s a Telos Axia installation. Johnny has an Alice Air 2000 mixer, as does Strood and the ship. Totally, but very good analogue.
Anyone streaming in goes into a channel on the Alice in Strood, and then out to the world via the DSPX Mini HD processor, or to 648 via the analogue TV Optimod with just its AGC and dual band compression in circuit. It’s limiter knocked the stuffing out of the audio so I switched it off.
So all audio, including streamed in and pre-records gets exactly the same treatment on all outlets.
The only difference being streaming-in rates, or recording rates. As far as I know, pre-records are done at 320 to make that part of the process as transparent as possible.
By the way there’s a common misconception that if we’re streaming at 128, there’s no point in any stage including the music files being any higher. Nothing could be further from the truth. MP3 artefacts are cumulative so the better that you can make any stage, the less it will affect the end result.
I’ve always thought Chris’ mic sounds particularly nice. It’s a Heil PR40. Sounds like a capacitor mic, but it’s dynamic.
Otherwise I don’t think there are huge differences in the audio between the various sources.
