I believe it was seen as an embarrassment by those at Highgate and on the Ross this is why PM doesn't like the chap that much and tolerates him just to be polite many know this to be so.

As I understand it Malcolm only had a very small role in Caroline in the Mi Amigo days with people like Cosmic taking the lead. Malcolm's rise to prominence seemed to be later on after the Ross became established as I think Cosmic was still in the driving seat in the early days of The Ross

Whether the Highgate Hippy was troubled by Freddie's station seems a tad unlikely to me.
