When modulation is added to the AM carrier eg. 4kW EMRP, on average, the album station's received signal strength is 1-2dB higher than the carrier only. However on Saturday and Sunday, readings were 2-3dB higher than today(Monday), ie back to what recently we are used to. Listening over the weekend, it was closer to what I expected when the Ofcom description of the (new) service area was announced last August. The DPSX (when set up properly (and I am sure it is)) can emulate the Orban Optimod, but hardly anyone mentions the sound level that came from Laser558, which was a completely different unit. All three can be switched to LOUD. My girlfriend this morning instantly noticed the difference from Sat/Sun. The only conclusions that can be made is - 1. the processor settings were different, or 2. the TX power was increased by at least 4dB(10kW output-for experimental purposes), to give an EMRP of 6.66kW or if 6dB (15kW output), 10kW EMRP. Anyway the final decision between coverage distance v running cost, and eventual permanent 2mV primary area will rest on the current management, engineers and Ofcom. Scottg.
