There was a program on BBC TV some years ago, maybe 10, where the presenter, along with the OED, investigated the origins of certain words and phrases. Anorak (in this context) being one of them.
They were aware of the claim that it originated on a pirate radio ship, and, unable to find any evidence to the contrary, agreed that this was most likely the first use of the word to describe an enthusiast.
