Longer Antennas for AM will always pick up better, but with most things in the world
a compromise is usual, what with peoples obsession with what things look like,
over what they work like etc...
I was listening to 648 for a bit weekend, and for a daytime groundwave, at same sort of distance
that you are Mike, (around 100 miles) In the Midlands here, its quite solid but a bit shushy
(on a normal short car aerial), I hope to try the Longer whip I bought soon, (at the front, same base)
to see what Improvement it makes
On the best compromise front, with a roof mounted car aerial, around 30 inches ideally more
will be good for AM and FM as well, Also needs to be sort of upright, the go faster sloping mode
messes them up quite a bit
On the DRM front, The FM Band in other Countries goes down below 87 megs, In the UK it's used
for Comms, but they ought to plan a Low VHF band for DRM, would be better than DAB
Armstrong who invented FM in the USA, in the early days did it below 50 megs
