someone had fixed the sound absorbing boxes, into just the plasterboard ceiling above him
Record playing, box came loose, hit him on the head, then knocked the arm of the record
and music that was playing was "Silence is Golden" or something similar or appropriate
Not had a good listen to 648 processing recently, Different people hear things differently !
but one effect, that causes harsh or annoying hi end, is excessive levels around 3khz
easy to get right on FM, but AM is not so easy, what with Pre-emphasis and the need
to sharply roll off the very high end, to stop excessive sideband energy
The reason that some find it harsh, is a human effect, where in some people, the Ear Canal
between the outer ear, and the ear drum, can produce a hearing peak in Sensitivity
due to it becoming like a sort of resonant tube, at around the 3khz region
Many years back, some BBC monitor speaker designs were made, where the Cross over networks
in the back of the box, (that splits the signal to the different drive units in the same box)
were done to reduce the Level around the 3khz area, to make them sound 'nicer'
This is obviously not what you need for a monitor speaker, but these were aimed at home Hi-Fi
If you research this on the net, various conflicting stories emerge, especially from the
dyed in the wool Hi-Fi purists, but if you want to look, search for 'BBC Dip'
Early Analogue processors such as the Orban 9100, split the high end, into two different
multibands, so that it has control of excess levels, around centre freq's of 3.7khz and 6.2khz
So excessive drive, has up to 25db of gain reduction, if a harsh recording is played
But without reducing the very fine high end, or Air as it's sometimes called
So with a harsh recording, the 3.7khz band will duck the harsh bits, without reducing
the 6khz energy, just before the sharp roll off filter cuts in
Same with the bass end, separate multibands with centre freq's at 150hz and 420hz
Along with the parametric bass EQ, allows gain reduction of the boomy 300-400hz region
without reducing the deep bass around 100hz or so
