Re: Future of BBC Longwave 198
It's always struck me that Droitwich 198KHz has provided very poor coverage for such a large power input. I've always thought it provided very scrappy and noisy reception during my travels through Britain. On the continent it fairs even worse. In Berlin the old Orfordness 648 kHz gave infinitely superior reception and Droitwich generally fades out completely about a third of the way down France. Even Radio 5 Live MW is generally a better signal in Europe. The (now mostly closed) continental LW transmitters provided a far stronger signal in the UK than Droitwich did in Europe. It even needed two booster stations in Scotland to be heard up there. Is this because the station location provides a relatively poor earth or is the antenna system simply inadequate?
