The Coastguard vessl is a former PLAN type 056 Corvette converted to a Coastguard Vessel (Nangyan) when the Chinese decided to intimidate the PCG re-supply ships for marines on disputed reefs and islands in the South China Sea.It collided with a Type 052C Destroyer four times its size. So, blue on blue as the Americans say. Neither captain did enough to avoid the collision.
This happening is an almost perfect demonstation of the application of science explaining the result:
1. The iceberg that Titanic hit is estimated to have displaced four times as much as Titanic. Perhaps Titanic really would have survived a head on impact with the iceberg!
2. This collision appears to have come within a couple of yards of being a three body collision (ie three items colliding simultaneously). To take just one topical example: The USA did not need to test a model of Little Boy before the Hiroshima bombing because only two pieces of Uranium needed to collide to produce an atomic explosion. The USA did the Trinity test (the name Trinity says it all) because several pieces of fissile material had to come together in the target area inside the bomb to produce a critical mass to explode in Fat Boy. It took years of testing to get a reliable weapon....
