Generally, in the early years of the war, ships sailing S from the UK round the Cape would dis-embark their LAA @ Freetown, SL, for fitting to N-bound ships. (A similar procedure was followed @ Bermuda, for ships heading W to the Pacific).
(Pre 7/12/1941 ships trading wholly in the Indian & Pacific Oceans were not armed at all).
