For Royal Mail the critical size is the thickness limit of 2.5cm for Large Letter postage.
It is almost impossible to wrap an item of any significance at our scale sufficiently to give adequate protection within this thickness limit - which puts the final package up to (expensive) Small Parcel prices.
Wrapping something in bubble wrap and putting it in an ordinary envelope will only get you a nasty surprise at the Post Office counter, Des.
