Its news to me, but Hackforth-Jones did serve as a 'middy' in HMS Emperor of India in WWI so he should know what he was saying.
(A one time Midshipmen had a 'personal log-book' [or similar], in which to note 'things of interest' for future use - this is the sort of thing that would be noted)
