There were several aircraft carriers before Furious including Campania - most of which were cross channel ferries that hoisted sea planes in and out of the water.

I haven't checked the dates, but I believe that Furious was the first major warship (and not a merchant ship) to have a dedicated flying off deck installed. In this guise 2 'landing ons' were tried - one successful the other fatal for the pilot.
