Jeff that base looks similar to the ones that come with the Trumpeter carrier and battleship models in 1/700 Scale. Don't know if tacky is the right word, but flimsy sure is. Friend of mine took a Trumpeter vac-uformed base, cut a piece of plywood (3/4" I think) to fit under it, then used dry wall filler putty spread thinly over the base surface, let it dry for a couple of days, then painted it. It came out very nice.
