Accordingly I contacted Antics, here in Plymouth, to check whether they had a date when their models would be delivered. I was told that they had actually received them that day and they were on sale in the shop.
A brisk walk down the road and I bought my model for £52.25.
It is supplied in a clear plastic display case, inside a card outer sleeve, and mounted on a rather 'tacky' vac-formed 'sea' base. There is an option to display the model on two small pedestals, or on the sea base. The blurb on the package stated that the full hull model is made from metal - it is, and it's a substantial model.
First impressions are good. I haven't yet measured the model but it certainly looks accurate. The hull is a one piece casting and features the pronounced 'bulb' bow and, at the other end, twin screws and rudders. The paint finish is excellent throughout. The tampo printed deck markings appear accurate and are neatly done.
As the model is aimed at the 'collector market' (Corgi point out on the sleeve that it's not a toy) it's a shame that the F35s are 'welded' to the deck and not mounted in a way that would enable an undercarraige to be shown. The model also has 3 Chinook helicopters fixed to the deck but no Merlins - why?. One feature that I particularly like is a lowered lift that has an F35 fixed to it.
The model is 1/1250 scale and has no detachable lower hull. To my mind these are two drawbacks. I know others won't be troubled by this, but at a time when there is the prospect of new Tri-ang releases, the lack of a 1/1200 waterline, die cast QE to display alongside them is a shame.
Apart from this 'missed opportunity', this is a good model on its own merits and anyone wanting a full hull QE should get one.
