Thank you Roger for this very interesting analysis. Surely the issue here is that ours is a rather niche hobby, with very small volumes of models made and sold and that, inevitably, will result in high unit prices. By way of comparison, I have recently purchased from a French company a replica of a Napoleonic marshal's baton and it cost me £262. Yes, it's expensive but I don't suppose the market for such items is very large, as with our little ships. I wonder if, many of us being of a certain age, there is an element of nostalgia that we remember what Triang ships (which were, after all toys rather than models per se) cost? Anyway, I don't think the prices charged nowadays are unreasonable, given the basic economics of a small market-place. Whether enough people can afford them is a another matter.
