The connections Kate makes are indeed very interesting and important. One of the more significant achievements of last week's Festival was to make - or perhaps force many of us to make - those kinds of connections. Add reference to Carl Honore's Under Pressure to the readings and conversations mentioned and the loop is closed. (See William Sheridan's review posted this afternoon).
I'm reading Dangerous World right now and would have to say that Marq de Villiers makes a different sort of, but just as important contribution to the discussion of risk and anxiety. We are indeed at risk, but overwhelmingly these risks are beyond an iota of human control. Moreover our sample is so miniscule, we have no idea what our chances of survival could possibly be. I'll expand on this when I post my review later this week.
Oddly, realizing our astronomically perilous situation, or a bigger bit or it at minimum, is strangely reassuring. Am I drawing on what I learned of faith from The Jesus Sayings or is this just my kluge like brain at work? Regardless, Kate, be sure to wear a helmet on the road or the rock face.
This being Earth Day, Marq is all over the CBC airwaves talking about risk perspective. He was interviewed on The Current this morning.
