So the other day I was reading Joseph Mallozzi's blog http://josephmallozzi.wordpress.com/ (he's one of the main writers for Stargate) and he was listing his top 20 favorite movies from 1992 and up. Which was a weird choice I thought, but then I read he was inspired by a list Quentin Tarantino had made for Sky TV in the UK when he hosted films there. 1992 being picked cause that's when his first film came out.
So, thinking it sounded like a fun thing to do, I hit wiki for lists of all films released during those years. I've left some recent films out (Star Trek, Drag me to Hell, 500 Days of Summer) simply because I just saw them and they haven't had a chance to "sit" yet.
I also tried to pick movies that I thought had cinematic worth for the long haul as well and not just ones that I simply dug (although that didn't always fly--I put Radioland Murders in there, a film I adore but that not many other people do....although my gal Jenny did as well, which is just more proof at how awesome she is.)
There were many, many runners up. My initial list was 64 films...and that was trying to be picky!
Some runners up: Flesh and Bone, No Escape, Star Trek Generations (yes, I liked it,) Casino, Copycat, Heat, Fargo, Deconstructing Harry, The Edge, A Simple Plan, The Big Lebowski, Existenz, South Park: Bigger, Larger and Uncut, Ginger Snaps 1 and 2, O Brother Where art Thou, Black Hawk Down, The Others, Master & Commander, Willard, King Kong, V For Vendetta, Slither, Casino Royale, Rocky Balboa, Rambo (yes, Rambo,) Iron Man and Speed Racer (don't believe the hype, it's awesome!)
Here's the list:
20) Iron Giant
19) Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
18) Kill Bill 1 & 2
17) Battle Royale
16) Radioland Murders
15) Wall-E
14) Devil's Rejects
13) Unforgiven
12) The Insider
11) Ocean's 11
10) Jackie Brown
9) Clockers
8) Lone Star
7) The Mist
6) Dark Knight
5) Rushmore
4) Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
3) Shaun of the Dead
2) Ed Wood
1) Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
There you go...and #'s 1-4 changed as I was typing it so I'm sure the life expectancy of this list is about 5 minutes.
Coming up soon: My fave horror films of all time
