Yep, that time of year again. Time to make lists! Last year I picked THE MIST as my favorite horror film. How about this year?
TOP TEN HORROR FILMS OF 2008
(ALTHOUGH IT'S MORE A TOP 7...I'M CHEATING A BIT WITH THE FIRST 3...THERE'S STILL QUITE A FEW FILMS I HAVEN'T SEEN. SO MY 8-9-10 PICKS ARE MOVIES I HAVEN'T WATCHED YET, BUT AM HOPING I'LL REALLY DIG...OR PEOPLE I KNOW WHO I TRUST HAVE DUG THEM, ETC. THEY ARE IN NO ORDER)
10) THE ORPHANAGE. Mindwarp loves it. Holly loves it. Salome loves it. I just haven't had a chance yet. I think I actually even own it on DVD!
9) MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN. I have no idea why I didn't watch this on Comcast's fearnet. Waiting for the Blu-Ray
8) POULTRYGEIST. Let's face it...once I see this it will probably rocket to the top 5 at least.
(OKAY....NOW FOR THE ONES I ACTUALLY SAW)
7) DOOMSDAY. It wasn't Dog Soldiers or the Descent. It wasn't Escape from NY. But it was pretty damn fun and Rhona Mitra was pretty damn hot. And it gets better everytime I watch it. I enjoyed it.
6) MULBERRY ST. Technically in theatres in 2007, but on DVD in 2008. One of the 8 Films to Die for. I dug the hell out of this movie about...well, basically rat zombies taking over NY. Sounds goofy, yeah, but it's dead serious and very well made and just a great flick. Check it out.
5) CLOVERFIELD. Would probably be up higher except there's really no way to recapture the feel of seeing it the first time in the theatre. Man, the walls shook with the sound and we were right up close. I've mellowed on it a bit now. But that night I saw it...I LOVED IT! A great monster movie.
4) QUARANTINE. Awesome. I still haven't seen the Brazillian original, REC., but I dug the hell out of this film. Really, really great stuff.
3) DEXTER. I know...what? Well, season 2 tech. It came out on DVD in 2008. Season 3 on now (which I haven't seen.) But I was turned on to Dexter this year and devoured seasons 1 and 2. Just an amazing show. And I included TV shows last year and the year before with a cpl Masters of Horror eps...so why not?
2) HELLBOY II. Strange it's not #1 as I do love myself some Hellboy. But, yeah, this was great. I loved it.
1) X-FILES: I Want to Believe. Yep, that's right. Now I know apparently everyone but myself, Mindwarp, Roger Ebert and Meg hated this movie. Like HATED it. I don't get it. I loved it. And just finished watching it again on Blu-Ray right now. A very serious, atmospheric, slow burning, creepy character piece that I loved. And I loved that the actual horror story plot is so fu@#ed up (really, it's a completely messed up plot and really just twisted) and it's almost incidental to the story of Mulder and Scully and where they are and their various crisis of belief.
SPOILERS: I mean, c'mon, two male lovers who when one of them has terminal lung cancer they hook up with crazy russain doctors to transplant the man's head onto a hot chick's body so the couple can still stay together...with one of the having his head on a chick's body! (bears repeating) And two headed guard dogs, etc! And all of this is like background window dressing. I loved Skinner's reaction when he sees what's going on, when it's brought out into the open.)
END SPOILERS.
But yeah, everyone despised this film. I don't know what to say.
HONORABLE GENRE MENTIONS:
These are films I would've put in the top 10 if it extended to sci-fi/genre films.
DARK KNIGHT. Yep, just awesome. Just watched it again the other day. A pretty much perfect film.
WALL-E. A perfect film.
IRON MAN. Awesome.
HULK. Though I still don't get the hate on the Ang Lee Hulk which I loved...I enjoyed the heck out of this movie.
OTHER MOVIES I DIDN'T SEE BUT WHO KNOWS?
RUINS: Mindwarp said it was fun.
THE SIGNAL: I still want to check this out.
SPIRAL: I didn't get all the Hatchet love from last yeat...I didn't like it much at all. But I still want to check this out.
BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT OF THE YEAR?
Easy...DIARY OF THE DEAD. What. The. Hell.
