Why is it that so many AAU clubs have backed away from wrestling freestyle?
The lack of athletes from east of Lewistown/Billings was painfully obvious this past weekend. The arguement could be made that the tournament is still being as well attended by those in the West as always but that it's the East's clubs who no longer come. Why? Is it a geographical thing? Yes, freestyle is different. But, when embraced by the coaches and club, the kids love it. And, it's still wrestling. It's more time in the practice room. It's more time on the mat at tournaments. Ultimately this will result in stronger wrestlers being produced from our state.
I know that there is the arguement regarding nationals tourneys being heavily favored toward folkstyle (RMN series, WOW series, USA dominator, AAU). But, there is also a lot of opportunity for regional and national freestyle/greco. This year in particular presents a wonderful opportunity for wrestlers in our state to not have to travel very far at all in order to compete in regional and national tournaments for both usa and aau.
So, why the disappearance of freestyle, Montanans from the east?
