I am sitting here at Montana Freestyle State, and can't help but be dismayed by the emptiness of the Civic Center. Not so long ago, you had to come very early to be sure you had a seat, clubs would try to reserve sections, and arguments and fights would break out over saving seats. The noise level was deafening, the mood was exhilerating, and you could feel the competition in the air. Moms would plan for ways to sneak food past the door search because you knew going in that you were going to be here for 2 very long, expensive days. The line to get in the door in the morning was long, crowded and full of families who knew each other from years of attending these tournaments.
The Parade of Athletes reveals way too much about the lack of interest in this tournament. What happended to the powerhouse clubs that seemed to have a never ending number of wrestlers in club colors pouring out on to the floor? How many clubs have no one to cheer for them as they are announced because everyone they have is down on the floor in the parade? How come some clubs have more coaches than wrestlers? How many weight classes failed to even have enough wrestlers on the card to qualify them for team points?
Sad.
