Interesting thoughts "Dad". Feb. 16 was originally scheduled for Anaconda. But, they lost their facility at the last minute due to a scheduling conflict; that weekend still saw wrestling with Butte hosting the Cyclops tourney on Sunday the 17th. As to Kalispell's tournament, they stepped in at the last minute due to MT USA Cobra (Townsend) losing their facility for that weekend.
The two things that create logjams in the season right now seem to be the increased attention in Folkstyle nationally through the end of March (RMN is the third week in March, USA Folkstyle nationals is the first weekend in April). Also, the USA Western Regional Greco/Freestyle tournament isn't held until the third week in June. So, even having state at the time that we are this year still leaves a long period of non-competition for the wrestlers that go to this. As a comparison, CA finishes their freestyle season two weeks before Regionals. It's evident year in and year out that they are in end of season form at the beginning of that tournament and our kids are shaking a little rust off.
I totally understand the baseball/soccer position. My son is currently doubling practices between wrestling and baseball; and will do so pretty much the entire baseball season while he trains for Western Regionals, Nationals (7/3-5)or AAU Grand Nationals (7/10-12); I'm not sure what he'll want to attend this year. But, they're all so close, it's tempting. Regardless, this translates into wrestling overlapping with his Spring/Summer sport of choice.
What's the right choice? Beats me! I guess leaving the season longer at least allows those that want to continue to compete with that option while those who want to move on to other sports, either commit to both for a while or simply make the change. The freestyle state may not be as big as I'd like but it's always competitive.
