if you are not guilty of it my advise would be to try to get it heard in a crown court magistrates courts tend to be biased (they were formally known and run as Police Courts)
as you have not been tried yet not any sentence passed you are innocent until proven guilty therefore do not declare it
finally if you were sick just prior to the hearing they would have to adjourn it as long as you notified the court say 4 days in advance Doctors cert etc required maybe use of solicitor too this would get the case adjourned for a few months and you will have passed the knowledge by then and the penaly would not be then as server such as being thrown off the knowledge
once qualified you would then be able to afford a barrister (essential) to defend yourself when you do go to court
