i understand that public education is funded out of the public coffer, a.k.a. tax dollars. i am also of the opinion that taxes are currently too high and need to be brought down, not incrementally hiked.
you are looking at this entirely from SBCC's perspective, which is fine, but realize that there is more to this great nation than our great community college system. our nation was founded on individualism and freedom from an oppressive regime. by raising taxes every year, we are inviting that oppressive regime back into our homes. the more power we give to the government, the more they will take. this is a guarantee. this year, the excuse is aging buildings at City College. next year, the excuse will be elementary schools, or water purification, or whatever. the government, of which the community college system is a branch, needs to learn to live within their means, and we as taxpayers need to be adamant of that fact lest we be steamrollered by our own government.
your challenge for me to materialize untold millions or forfeit my position is a false dilemma. i challenge both the sum of monies needed and the immediacy of that need. i think i've illustrated that City College could save quite a bit of money by simply not erecting that monolithic new building. by packaging this project in with the renovation projects, they cloud the issue of whether this measure is really the emergency provision it is being made out to be.
as a proponent of this tax, i feel it is incumbent upon you to justify it rather than it being my task to prove that it is not justified.
and concerning my misreading of your statements, you were ridiculing me about something and i assumed (since you omitted any reference to Measure V in your list of funding for the SOMA building) that this was your stance. thanks for clarifying that. so... you were ridiculing my use of the word "new" to describe the SOMA building? i think it would generally qualify as being "new" by virtue of it having not been built yet.
hey, it's still not too late to save City College a lot of money!
