Not from what I've read. Prop. 92 is mostly concerned with preserving existing funding for community colleges through reallocation of state funds. Measure V, on the other hand, increases property taxes in Santa Barbara to fund specific construction projects at SBCC.
Don't get me wrong - I love SBCC. I'm an alumnus myself. I just think that part of the school's charm is its relatively spacious campus. I remember when there were few or no portable buildings anywhere on campus. Now they're everywhere. It's disgusting. If Measure V passes, they're going to put up another huge building. That's the last thing SBCC needs!
Santa Barbara is quickly turning into a suburb of L.A., and there are some deep pockets behind the trend. A few people with strong economic interests in development and expansion stand to profit from these measures. Construction and landscaping companies are doing very well at the moment... Local politicians who approve development projects accept thinly-veiled kickbacks (I know this from a reliable source)... Tract housing continues to spring up on the periphery of town... Costs of living are going up and the American dollar is going down, due in part to inflation (the government mints more money because they are INSOLVENT due to interest on bonds, such as those proposed by Measure V)...
We are inching toward a global dystopia, and perhaps I am naive to think that I can make a difference by writing the odd "angry rant". But then again, what good are civil liberties if we never exercise them? At least half the reason I do it is simply to provoke a dialog and remind people that there is a dissenting viewpoint. It's the absence of dissent that always creeps me out and makes me think that somebody is up to no good...
