This is yet another scheme to raise the already ridiculously high property taxes here in Santa Barbara, giving more power to our corrupt local government and less to you, the taxpayer. According to The Channels, City College has hired the PR firm "Mary Rose & Associates" to push this measure on us, and try to convince the locals that it's in our best interest to dump more money into an ever-expanding SBCC. The unfairness of this proposal is further aggravated by the fact that many, if not most, City College students are from out of town, other states or other countries! If this measure passes, residents of Santa Barbara will be bearing an even heavier burden than they already are, for the sake of educating other people's children.
Advocates of the measure attempt to trivialize the amount by which taxes would be raised, as though a small step in the wrong direction is somehow "no big deal". These "little" steps add up. It seems that every year, more bond measures like this one are put on the ballot, and they usually pass. They pass because we have government agencies such as City College hiring PR firms like "Mary Rose" to inundate us with political commercials. Does anyone else see the inherent conflict of interest here? It's just this kind of unholy union between political agendas and the government that has been responsible for the rise of despotic regimes such as the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany.
Naturally, the government wants more money. They always do. On June 3rd, tell them "No!"
