He died from injuries he received in a car crash.
As for being cut off from the family, that was more a result of the break up of his parents more than anything else.
Nicholas's children talk politely about their grandfather, but it was a case of him going out for the paper and never returning. He also never looked back. The times the Nicholas saw his father could be counted on my fingers.
