I would have serious doubts that David is financially independent, unless his father made money in racing. His own website has little information on the doings of the family (apart from exchanging "protocols" with MOntenegro.) Dad's career in racing was limited - and he was not a high profile, top racer. He was known in Spain for his racing - but not internationally.
It is also possible that there is money on mom's side of the family.
