Nicholas II was ill-prepared to be emperor in a changing Russia. Nor did he have the education - and he was a terrible, ineffective ruler. He had poor advisors, including his wife. He refused to accept change and make change - and he and his family paid dearly for that.
Nicholas and Alexandra allowed themselves to be insulated and insular. They loved each other but they could not see beyond the palace walls. Their children were emotionally stilted. Other members of the Family were more content to live lavishly. They offered criticism freely but also were not able to cope as a united family to bring the monarchy down to the people, and offer support for the need for a parliamentary monarchy. Russia was a country rich in natural resources, but the industrial revolution was limited. The military was weak and ineffective as well.
