I guess the main benefit I see (or would see) is that the other person obviously wants to meet someone (after weeding out those wanting casual hookups), and thus has paid to be on a site.
But as I said, time and intolerance of morons keeps me offline. If I move back to London I'll use dating sites to meet people though. It is the only way to meet a lot of people and it's common, unlike here.
