I was not intending to dismiss methods of discussion or confrontation that allow for closure. Only that it is not going to go very far to get the offender out of jail.
Regarding my idea of hard labor rather than death penalty (in many cases), it may not be a deterrent, but at least there is some return to society for what they have taken. This addresses a point in your next paragraph, to take burden off of the state (i.e. taxpayers) and have individuals pay for their own incarceration. I don't see why that should be seen as far-fetched. If I live by the laws then I have to work to avoid living on the street, but if I kill someone then I can sit on my butt all day? Makes zero sense.
And though I don't think you were referring to me, I am only for lower taxes where they do not make sense, or where the money will be spent wastefully.
Going back to your question of, "Are you proposing to deny all serious offenders from stimulation... or just those that are never going to leave prison?" The idea was that people who are not interested in the rehab/education route would lose privileges. The more severe end of that tack would be for long-term prisoners.
I'll admit to not having worked out all the kinks - which doesn't particularly bother me as none of this is getting implemented - but the idea is that the crime that the person committed was a choice, and now they have to make a choice to get better and be better.
Rather than having people sit around, getting jailhouse tattoos, forming gangs, attacking and raping and killing each other, their lives should become increasingly worse until they see that they should change their way of life. For some that will only require entering jail, or class time, or frank discussion. Others will have to feel it because abstractly thinking about it doesn't reach them.
Perhaps there could even be some attachment of the length of prison sentence to rehab. The idea being somewhat similar to a mental institution where patients must be deemed fit to re-enter society. I can see how this sort of system could be gamed, and that is why I am reluctant to want it. But assuming it was implemented well, I find it very fitting. Plus, it would mesh well with my other ideas because if you are not interested in rehab, feel free to stay in prison, which won't be fun.
