I wasn't questioning your question, just stating my bias. And I must admit that I, too, have had large gaps of non-writing. And I have fewer than 625 entries in what is approaching 9 years. The math says I'm not productive, just stubborn.
I'm not sure I would so readily agree with the 'writing hampers' makes more sense than 'writing enhances,' but I can see both sides.
I don't know how often I consciously write with an audience in mind, but I am aware they are there nearly always. A few times I've gone back and deleted or edited because I wasn't paying attention to the open nature of it, but that has been very rare.
I think my writing leans more towards dialogue-seeking, most times. That, I think, stems from not getting enough proper conversations in daily life. Casual conversations are fine, but sometimes I really want opinions or ideas or debates on particular topics (and sometimes I just want whatever is in someone else's head).
But no, I've never written for someone else to fill in the holes. While one or two people could fill in some of my past, no one could fill in gaps in recent events.
