writing more often just means that whatever quality filters i normally have in place (few) are removed for sake of quantity. encourage this at your own peril.
first thing first, quit apologizing. this is for all sorts of communication, rant at your leisure.
as for the particular writing that seems to have sparked this (mine, not mr. diamond's), my main point had more to do with horrible parenting (and some side thought given to spreading of disorders and diseases just because no one wanted to stop someone else from impregnating themself or someone else).
overpopulation, while related, is a separate issue that i think we have significant degree of accord on. i don't remember the particular book or article, but i believe edward o. wilson put forth the idea that the human population should be at least halved, gathered together into urban centers (not herded, just that we should live that way) so that other species and the earth itself will have the bulk of the land for keeping everything in check. [perhaps it was that humans should occupy half the land and leave the rest alone..?] in any case, drastic change. his argument, if i remember, was based on the desire for retaining biodiversity, which is different than what we are discussing, but related.
back to what i meant.. i was not implying the need for master race or one-child formulae, rather the need for good parents. many many social and later psychological ills seem to have their roots in how someone was raised, and the examples they grew up with, the love they grew up with, and - though aside from parenting skils - the genes one has. so, ensure parenting skills (to some degree) would help in many areas.
genetic screening, though not what i was getting at, is also an interesting topic that i must admit has its merits.
anyway, now i'll stop rambling..
