I started him with a bunch of 1 and 2 syllable body part words. My goal was for him to include 2 syllables in 2-syllable words, but in Spanish it can be difficult to think of 2 syllable words. However there are a good number of 2 syllable body part words.
He did well with that and then we moved on to more sound by sound work. I don't recall the sequence, as this was years ago, but I feel that starting with the body part words was a big help for him. Having success at saying "the whole word" (for the most part) helped him realize he needed to include more sounds in other words. I still tried to emphasize 2 syllable words for awhile, but we'd throw in a few longer words and see how it went. I think he did better with short phrases of 1 and 2 syllable words prior to using 3 syllable words on their own.
