Can you ask to observe them playing w/ him? Tell them you'd like to observe and chart his communicative interactions to establish a baseline (record gestures, vocalizations, word approx.-what ever he uses). It would be interesting to see what their interaction, language and play w/ him looks like. Sometimes taking yourself out of the interaction may help you to develop a plan. Also ask them to describe his typical day.
Where are his play skills now? Is he interested in Cause and Effect toys?
