I use Melissa and Doug wooden magnet scenes (e.g., farm/ocean/jungle scenes with matching animals). We take turns and I often put the animals in the wrong environment, like the whale at the farm. I agree with Karlie that kids find absurdities funny and are more engaged that way.
Other good materials: pop-up books or books that require the child to open flaps. I've had good experiences with kids commenting on things in these types of books. Puppets are also great. Dress-up and pretend play elicits great language.
