We have 6 year old triplet boys in our school who have been in the preschool disabled program since they were 3 and have this year started mainstream kindergarten having a personal aid. These triplets have had severe behavior problems for the past 4 years. When ANY demands are put on them, they completely break down and refuse to do anything related to school or academics. They have "meltdowns" several times a day which include: refusing to get on or off the bus (making their body limp so they have to be carried), throwing themselves on the floor, crawling under tables, screaming, grunting, and removing their clothes. When these things happen, they refuse to use their language, although all three have been receiving speech therapy for 4 years and are able to use language to communicate and are able to use phrases such as "I need a break" when prompted to do so in the therapy room. However, within the classroom they refuse to use language when in these situations. The school is looking to me as the speech therapist to resolve this problem. I have run out of ideas as to how to get them to express themselves when having meltdowns, instead of grunting, etc. (FYI, we suspect that they are emotionally disturbed. However, all three are bright boys). Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
