I would try some communicative temptations where you create situations that entice him to communicate. If the situations are motivating enough he will likely imitate more words to get what he wants. Try blowing bubbles once and then waiting. If he says bubbles or some other word then model a two word phrase, e.g., "want bubbles" or "blow bubbles". Wait a few seconds to see if he'll respond.
