I work on imitation by starting to imitate the child myself - whatever they're doing. If they're jumping, I jump. If they've put a ball in the hole, I put a ball in the hole. If they make an excited noise, I make an excited noise. It teaches turntaking, reciprocity and helps them to see that their actions have a response. With time - doing this a lot, encouraging parents to do this at home - the child will start imitating actions and sounds, and then when he's imitating desired actions fairly consistently, start really encouraging him to imitate words.
