Tana's suggestion will also increase the amount of time the sounds of the word and its expressive meaning will stay in his mind - hopefully giving him more time to process it and therefore reinforcing his ability to use the word and to use the sounds in the word appropriately (this will also build his ability to monitor his speech output!). Keep this at teh single word level until he can do this well, and then gradually build up.
Introducing a picture system will also help him 'fix' the words, as well as providing him with a means to communicate for now. It'll also help give you a structure to help him use single words clearly and to build his sentence structures and his other communicative functions. The other nice thing I find with communication systems - they help remind parents of how to use their language to meet their child's goals!
