Hi Kristin,
I worked with preschoolers this year and was delighted with their progress! I have to agree with slp[/u parents and teahers are vital to overall progress in therapy. For example, I often tell the classroom teacher that I want the child to request using a 3-word utterance such as "I want more". I make sure to tell the teacher to model the phrase that is expected in order to give the child an opportunity to imitate prior to releasing the desired object. I also try to explain that any attempt at what is correct is better than no response or a single word response.
You sound very concerned for the children and that is a wonderful thing, but be careful not to be too hard on yourself. If I understood you correctly, this is just the end of your CFY year. As the years go by, your confidence and knowledge in the field will grow. If you plan to stay with the preschoolers, be sure to familiarize yourself with 3 and 4 year old developmental norms. Also, make use of the communication log. Write notes to parents about what you are doing. I find parents are always happy to know how they can help. God bless you for caring so much! Do not be discouraged, I am sure you are doing a great job!
