I use books with no words or few words. I also like books that have movable parts (for younger kids). One way to engage kids is with your facial expressions- surprise, scared, etc. as you read. How you present the book depends on the age and skill of the child. I have found that the more I can "wonder" what might happen next the more they become interested.
Keep questions short and concrete (what did she see, where is she, etc.) except for the guessing on what might happen.
I have a handout on using books for language- just e-mail me and I'll send it to you.
The best advice I can give for ANY thing we do is to be flexible and read your group and adapt as necessary.
